Welcome to The Tree Council
Trees have a unique place in our environment. Without them, human life as we know it would not exist. Trees conserve water, make our air breathable, absorb air pollution, and form the hub of enormous underground micro-environments that strengthen soil and foster insect life.
The Tree Council is a long-standing non-profit organisation established in 1986 to act as a steward for the trees of the Auckland region in New Zealand. The Tree Council exists to protect, conserve and improve the tree cover in the Auckland region, especially in urban areas.

Auckland Heritage Festival Event 2026: Kai Rākau heritage food tree tour, BBQ and picnic
Learn all about the Kai Rākau NZ Food Tree Project & collaboration with The Tree Council on a Regional Heritage Fruit Tree Collection – and enjoy a FREE BBQ. All welcome – bookings are required.
This community-led initiative under the umbrella of Sustainable Paremoremo is dedicated to creating a living ‘museum orchard’. Since 2010, the project has lobbied for land, grafted, gathered and planted heritage fruit, nut, subtropical and native medicinal trees, preserving endangered varieties and to showcase what can thrive in the Auckland region.
The project also helps care for near-forgotten heritage orchard remnants throughout the Upper Waitematā, supporting biodiversity, community wellbeing, and the sharing of traditional food-growing and Rongoā Māori knowledge.
Join us for a family-friendly picnic and free barbecue among the heritage fruit trees, followed by a guided walk exploring the collection of food and medicinal plants. The event will take place on Saturday 17 October 2026. Please gather from 11.30am in Sanders Reserve at the corner of Merewhira (off Paremoremo Road) and Sanders Road. You can read more about the event here.
Bookings are required – please fill in the registration form here (so we know how many sausages to buy): https://forms.gle/AFETqT4yQw7ZWnyB6
and you can support us with a koha if you’d like to via this form: https://treecouncil.org.nz/donations/walk-koha/
